From Timber to Trails Explore our Historic Farm.
Waimapu Mill Station has seen many faces, some of which are still evident around the property today. Spot the towering native trees left by the old loggers and the many different fencelines that have held sheep, deer, dairy cows and now beef cattle. You may even be lucky enough to spot the wild deer that live nearby.
Woolshed Weddings
Having been with one family for 60 years, the farm has seen many weddings and birthday parties held late into the night at our Woolshed. Now partially converted, the Woolshed at Waimapu Mill Station is the ultimate venue for a rustic out of town wedding while still being a functioning shearing shed.
Horses
Horse trekking is not new to the farm but, having had a decent break, we have cleared overgrown tracks to open the farm up to horses again.
Calves
Waimapu Mill Station has been home to thousands of cattle. With two functioning cowsheds, the farm was a great producer of New Zealand grass fed milk for many years. A recent transition has enabled a change to dry stock. With the cowsheds no longer in use we start our treks at one of the cowshed facilities and allow trekkers to tour through a herringbone milking shed.
Sheep
Waimapu Mill Station was home to Waimapu Stud, an award-winning Perendale sheep stud in the 70s. The stud won the Sir Geoffrey Peren Trophy for outstanding commercial enterprise in Perendale farming in 1975. There is currently a small flock of Wiltshire sheep still on the farm.
The Waimapu Sawmill
Our knowledge of the farm goes back to 1921 when two local brothers started The Waimapu Sawmill on the banks of the Waimapu river which borders the farm. The records show milling of Rimu, Mangao, Miro, Tanekaha, Kahikatea and some Matai. Although many of these trees were selectively milled during the operation of the sawmill, those remaining are now protected by the farm.
